School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


Report directly to the Director to provide high-level, strategic support to translate the center’s mission and vision into concrete programs appealing to a diverse set of academic, alumni, community and industry stakeholders. The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director are to assist the Director in 1) strategic planning, 2) relationship-building and recruitment, 3) program development and execution, 4) public relations and fundraising, and 5) research activities, with the ultimate goals of building a Penn Neuroaesthetics research community, establishing the center’s reputation as a world leader in this innovative, interdisciplinary research domain, and assuring the long-term financial sustainability of the center.To this end, the Associate Director will work closely with the Center Manager in order to establish and maintain center programs and activities, and to connect center faculty, students, fellows, and staff. As the center grows, the responsibilities of this role will evolve to meet the changing needs of the Director and Center, but the Associate Director will remain an essential liaison between center members, collaborating departments at Penn, and external constituencies.


The minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 5 to 7 years of experience in research administration, science PR, or similar work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Master’s degree is a plus. Strategic thinker with excellent communication and organizational skills, excellent writing skills, ability to work both independently and collaboratively, self-starter with strong desire to contribute to the center mission, creativity identifying and addressing strategic opportunities and challenges, ability to identify and take initiative solving problems, ability to synthesize and effectively communicate research to diverse audiences, good judgment and competence with high-level logistical and planning decisions, ability to interact professionally with wide range of constituents, supervisory and project management experience, ability to multi-task and flexibly prioritize to meet deadlines.
