School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


The Associate Director will be responsible for the overall functioning of the Center for Public Health Initiatives (CPHI), a University-wide center founded in 2007 by the Provost’s Office to promote interdisciplinary research, education and practice in public health. CPHI acts as the organizational home and academic base for Penn’s multi-disciplinary, inter-school Master in Public Health (MPH) degree program, and it works to support the MPH program in terms of activities necessary for its accreditation. The Associate Director position provides critical administrative leadership and support to the CPHI and is an important link between CPHI and partner Centers and Departments at the University. The Associate Director will support the Executive Director of the Center in management of the overall mission of CPHI and the operational functions of CPHI, and it will also support the Directors of Education, Community Engagement, and Research, and integrate the programmatic initiatives taken on by each of these core areas. With CPHI’s shared mission with the MPH program, other focuses overseen by the Associate Director include: (i) engaging community stakeholders, alumni, employers and other relevant community partners; (ii) identifying community and professional opportunities for students; (iii) assessing the professional development needs of individuals currently serving public health functions in the community; and (iv) addressing the professional development needs of the current public health workforce in the community. This position will also interface directly with the MPH program to oversee field placement activities of MPH students engaged in public health activities within and outside of U Penn and to provide career advice for MPH students and alums. This position will supervise other staff in CPHI and be responsible for developing required reports and ensuring quality performance. Finally, as the Associate Director should have a background in public health practice, the position would also include teaching one semester of a public health methods course.


The minimum of a Master’s degree and 1 to 2 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required with emphasis on public health and a working knowledge of public health entities and funding of university related public health activities. Preference will be given to candidates with significant public health practice experience. Enthusiasm for creation of an interdisciplinary program encompassing large numbers of individuals with a creative and expansive vision and an ability to communicate this passion. Solid computer skills including MS Word, Excel, database management, Powerpoint, internet, and email. Experience writing and obtaining grants. Good verbal and written skills; ability to manage multiple priorities; excellent organizational and good customer service skills; interdisciplinary experience; and ability to work with persons of diverse backgrounds. Supervisory experience is required. Ability to work independently and effectively, as part of a team.
