Division of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) is Penn’s foremost provider of student services and educational access. VPUL partners and collaborates with diverse organizations across many dimensions including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, historical tradition, age, religion, disabilities, veteran status, interests, perspectives and socioeconomic backgrounds. We enhance the ability of nearly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, along with other community participants. University Life programs provide academic and career support, campus and community engagement, health and wellness programs, and much more. Our efforts help to fulfill Penn’s strategic vision of integrating knowledge across campus. VPUL is part of the Office of the Provost and includes 32 campus departments.


Due to the increased amount of internal data collection and external requests for information on our current students and alumni, Penn Career Services is seeking an Associate Director of Data Analysis and Visualization to work with our Digital Resources Manager. This is an exciting new position to help us better convey the diverse and interesting outcomes of Penn students and alumni, both collectively and for specific populations. The Associate Director will have the opportunity to create a new, more uniform and engaging style for all of our data reporting and visualization needs. This is a critical collaborative role in managing data relating to student career success that will play in an essential part in marketing our services to students, potential students, parents, campus administrators, and faculty, and that will maximize the ability of Career Services staff to engage effectively with employers. Career Services is a data-savvy office, and we are looking forward to leveraging the large amounts of data collected even more creatively to create convincing narratives about why career and professional development are so important to students. The Associate Director, as time allows, will also have the opportunity to provide individual career advising to students in the College of Arts and Sciences, review resumes and cover letters, provide mock interviews, and plan and present career-related workshops.


A Masters degree plus 2-3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with assisting in the collection and cleaning of survey data and preparing outcome reports both as static PDFs and as interactive graphics on our website. Strong graphic design and data visualization skills, including the ability to present results in a visually appealing and easy to understand format through infographics, handouts, online presentations and courses, publicity materials, blog entries, social media and our web pages required. Ability to create innovative approaches to showcase career trends, success, and advice through data analysis that reflects the changing needs of students and the world of work. A proven ability in taking the initiative on project work within a collaborative setting across multiple teams. Advanced level user of both Access and Excel and proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and/or InDesign are needed; experience with Tableau is a plus. Experience in statistical analysis and survey creation/management, including the ability to promote surveys to increase return rates is helpful. A high level of comfort with computers and web technology needed. Ability to manage deadlines and juggle multiple projects simultaneously. selected candidates will be contacted to submit a portfolio of their work or a URL to an e-portfolio during the evaluation process.While previous experience in a career advising role is helpful, it is not required. However, a desire to develop these skills and work with students in a career advising role is necessary. Experience with Handshake career services platform is a plus.
