The science news officer will handle science writing and science media relations for the departments of Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry and Math in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The position will also write for Penn’s website and for internal publications, including Research at Penn. The position is part of the News Group in Penn’s central communications office and reports to the Associate Director for News. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
A bachelor’s degree and 3 to 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, a master’s degree is preferred. Strong science background and experience in dealing with major national and international media as well as experience with social media and multimedia is highly desired. Seeking a self-starter who can see the broad picture while also attending to details, be able to work with Ivy League deans and faculty in translating research for lay audiences and who is a team player as well as an independent worker. Position requires superb reporting and writing skills and candidates must provide writing samples and take a writing test.
