Duties

The Sculpture Studio Technician is responsible for managing the sculpture studios and facilities, housed within the Department of Fine Arts, in School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. The facilities are located in two buildings – the Franklin Annex Fabrication Lab, and Charles Addams Fine Arts Hall – and include an advanced fabrication shop, a suite of sculpture studios and teaching spaces, as well as multi-use clay and kiln rooms and resources. Under the supervision of the Director of Undergraduate Fine Arts, the Sculpture Studio Technician will develop, implement, and maintain a studio workflow, best practices, and policies and procedures that relate to general usage, access, storage, and materials. The technician will maintain all equipment and tools, as well as perform small repairs, and provide technical support to students and faculty.

Qualifications

A HS Diploma or GED and 5-7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. A Bachelor’s Degree and 2-3 years of experience are strongly preferred.Experience operating the following equipment is also required: MIG welder, plasma cutter, metal chop saw, FESTA track saw, wood shop, hand tools, Heppa-vacuum system, plaster area, pug mill, clay extruder, mix glazes, recycle clay, and manage the firing process of all student bisque and glaze work in three electric and two gas kilns, in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres.
