School/Center Overview

Division of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) is Penn’s foremost provider of student services and educational access. VPUL partners and collaborates with diverse organizations across many dimensions including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, historical tradition, age, religion, disabilities, veteran status, interests, perspectives and socioeconomic backgrounds. We enhance the ability of nearly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, along with other community participants. University Life programs provide academic and career support, campus and community engagement, health and wellness programs, and much more. Our efforts help to fulfill Penn’s strategic vision of integrating knowledge across campus. VPUL is part of the Office of the Provost and includes 32 campus departments.


Supervise the Graduate and Professional School Advising unit of Career Services, including three Associate Directors and an Administrative Assistant. Oversee all advising of Penn students and alumni applying to graduate and professional programs. Set priorities for the unit and suggest budget implications of those priorities. Manage the implementation of the comprehensive Health Professions Advisory Board process for medical and dental school applications each year. Plan and supervise annual schedule of programs, workshops, panels, and graduate school recruiter visits. Compile and analyze statistical information on admission of Penn students to medical and law schools and become expert on admissions trends. Organize the development and updating of substantive information about graduate and professional programs for the Career Services website. Maintain relationships with admissions representatives at law, medical, and other graduate schools. Collaborate with Penn faculty and administrators in programming and advising activities. Receive administrative direction from and report to the Executive Director of Career Services.


A Master’s degree or more is required and 3-5 years of experience in graduate and professional school advising or related areas. A Ph.D, J.D. or M.D. is preferred. Excellent advising and communication skills, with the ability to work with students and alumni who are applying to a broad range of graduate and professional school programs. Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student body. Strong organizational and supervisory skills. Outstanding writing and presentation skills. Experience and interest in program planning. Ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, and graduate school admissions representatives. Ease with assimilating and retaining large volumes of information on graduate and professional school programs and admissions trends. Database and website management skills strongly preferred; social media skills helpful. Comfort with juggling multiple priorities and working well under pressure needed.
