School/Center Overview

Division of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) is Penn’s foremost provider of student services and educational access. VPUL partners and collaborates with diverse organizations across many dimensions including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, historical tradition, age, religion, disabilities, veteran status, interests, perspectives and socioeconomic backgrounds. We enhance the ability of nearly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, along with other community participants. University Life programs provide academic and career support, campus and community engagement, health and wellness programs, and much more. Our efforts help to fulfill Penn’s strategic vision of integrating knowledge across campus. VPUL is part of the Office of the Provost and includes 32 campus departments.


Reporting to the Vice Provost for University Life, the Senior Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs (SAVP) serves as the chief deputy to the Vice Provost for University Life for VPUL co-curricular academic programming; student affairs, activities, and initiatives, and as the formal deputy for the Vice Provost on the University Crisis Team. The SAVP is a core member of the VPUL Central Resource Management Team and helps promote the University’s and divisional missions by explicitly promulgating engagement, a sense of belonging, and a deeply-felt, shared connection to community throughout Penn’s vibrantly diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional student population in active partnership with the Undergraduate Assembly and the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, Penn’s charter student leadership bodies.On behalf of the Vice Provost, the SAVP leads strategic planning, program implementation, and major goal assessment efforts in support of these missions; ensures innovation and adherence to best practices in VPUL’s world class student affairs and student activities initiatives, and actively partners and promotes collaborative student affairs outreach and support programming with School and other University partners. This position has direct administrative oversight for the following VPUL departments: Career Services, Civic House, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, NROTC, Platt Student Performing Arts House, the Tutoring Center, Office of Student Affairs and the Weingarten Learning Resources Center, including Learning Resources and Student Disabilities Services. The SAVP also serves as the Vice Provost’s deputy for implementing the University’s Open Expression Policy and convenes the work of the University’s Open Expression Observers.


MS required, earned Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred with a minimum of 7 to 10 years experience in higher education administration including significant supervisory and budgetary responsibility preferably in a student affairs position. Must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a highly complex, challenging environment. In particular, the SAVP must have direct and demonstrated experience administering a substantial student affairs budget, supervising student affairs professionals, and managing conflict and change in a university environment.
