Detail-oriented web application developer with experience using PHP and MySQL programming within a LAMP stack environment, specifically in programming enterprise-level custom WordPress themes and plugins. Experience using code source management/workflow/deployment/testing tools are essential. Experience building web sites in support of marketing operations is desirable. Experience using multiple programming languages, and unix shell scripting is desirable. The Senior Application Developer will have joint responsibility for the development and maintenance of the code base that runs Wharton’s WordPress CMS with other members of the Marketing Operations application development team. Development responsibilities include feature upgrades, version releases, bug fixes, on and off hour support and working closely with external vendors when necessary. Additionally, this role will work on software architecture design, systems integrations, scoping requirements and developing approved customizations of individual websites. This person will work with the Marketing Operations team and its business partners to plan road maps, identify new features to existing applications, identify new applications that would streamline operations, and identify areas of improvement. The successful candidate will be passionate about enterprise-level programming and willing to take the time to stay abreast of new technologies for possible use in future school-wide applications. This position offers a dynamic and challenging team oriented work environment. This person will provide normal business hours and occasional off hours application support for the products he/she is responsible for. The position requires excellent judgment and high energy, excellent verbal and communication skills, and the ability to multi-task and produce under tight deadlines

Application Developer Duties: Active participant in the development of Wharton Marketing and Communication’s managed WordPress enterprise solution. Work collaboratively with third-party resources, administrative staff, and team members to provide solutions for needs that are not met by out of the box functionality and oversee project tasks to meet these needs. Maintain, enhance and repair existing solutions. Perform analysis and make recommendations on ways to improve stability and feature-sets for the existing portfolio of solutions. Exercise willingness to jump in and assist if there is an issue that needs to be addressed. Exercise teamwork. The Marketing Operations Team values collaboration, knowledge sharing and being a supportive team player. Exercise flexibility. Ability and willingness to work fluidly and pro-actively should priorities and requirements shift. Participate in all phases of software development life-cycle including High Level Design, Detailed Design, Development, Quality Assurance Testing, Closeout, Maintenance, and Project Management. Provide support for solutions by way of assisting the Marketing Operations Team with the development of training/support materials, and providing second tier support on escalated customer requests. Provide occasional off hours application support for the products he/she is responsible for, including scheduled off hours project work, and crisis technical support.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Programming and Technology Skills: WordPress Core programming, including API v2 and WP Query (required); Experience with programming REST frameworks necessary (required); PHP, including versions up to 7.0 (required); Javascript, and jQuery libraries (required); CSS, including versions up to 3.0, and Sass and LESS preprocessors (required); Source code management and workflow using tools such as GIT and modman (required); Working knowledge of MySQL, query design and relational database development (preferred); Familiarity with Apache2 and NGINX sever environments (preferred); Familiarity with writing and automating BASH shell scripts within a Linux Ubuntu server environment (preferred); Familiarity with Salesforce products, and building integrations using the Salesforce Platform APIs (preferred);

Soft Skills: Excellent judgment and high energy Must be able to act consistently with integrity, and handle confidential material with complete discretion. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills (required); Ability to multi-task and work effectively within tight turnaround schedules (required); Ability to formulate technical specifications from business requirements (required); Experience working within a Marketing Operations environment (preferred).
